Course Description:

This course is a graduate seminar where we will explore the transformations in American life during the Progressive Era (1890 to 1920). Topics covered in this course include the impact of industrialization on the United States; the related processes of immigration and urbanization; local, state, and national Progressive reform movements; the United States’ rise as a world power, the rise of the modern bureaucratic state; and how questions of race, class, gender, and ethnicity shaped American culture and politics. By focusing on these transformations of the Progressive Era, this course explores the origins of the modern United States.
