My music studies

Home

While in Bali I studied three areas of music in particular: tingklik, kendang, and various places in the gamelan gong kebyar ensemble.

I studied tingklik (sometimes also called "rindik") in a group of five with Pak Ketut Madra, a well-known and very kind tingklik teacher.  There were many challenges presented to me throughout this study.  First, I have never before played a percussion instrument with two mallets.  This, of course, required a separate melodic and rhythmic context for each hand.  The most important and prevalent difficulty, however, was the fact that our teacher, Pak Madra, did not speak more than ten words of English and we, in turn, did not speak much more than that of Bahasa Indonesian.  It was a challenge, but we learned two full pieces throughout our ten lessons with him.  (I was lucky enough to purchase two tingkliks, hoping that, because I had learned both polos & sangsih parts of the pieces, that I could teach someone here at home to play with me!)

I studied kendang with Pak Wayan Suweca.  Pak Suweca is a well-known drumming teacher at the Conservatory.  We learned 8 basic patterns and two other longer & more challenging patterns.  Pak Suweca was patient and funny.  He told some great stories.  Our final performance was enjoyed very much by the audience!

Finally, I studied three different gamelan gong kebyar instruments on three different pieces.  On the first I played the front ugal.  On the second I played the sangsih (syncopated) part on the pemade.  On the third I played the lowest position at the reyong.  The gamelan class was also taught by Pak Suweca.  He teaches both drumming and gamelan at the Conservatory.  As there were those on the trip studying dance, we accompanied them as we played.
