LOCATION
Where better to study Communication and Culture in Italy than in the heart of Florence? SACI's campus palazzo is located in the heart of this beautiful city, steps away from Michelangelo's Medici Chapel, Fra Angelico's masterpieces in San Marco, the colorful central market and Florence's Duomo.

During the summer months, Florence offers a remarkable range of cultural and popular events and activities such as: the famous Calcio (soccer) in Costume during which the different quarters of the city compete in this well-known game; the Maggio Musicale, a series of outdoor and indoor events ranging from ballet to opera to symphony concerts; outdoor evening film festivals; and the Estate Fiesolana, which includes concerts, film, and theater held in a Roman amphitheater.

FIELD TRIPS
Field trips to towns such as Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Siena and Fiesole form an integral part of the BGSU–SACI study experience. These on-site visits add a special dimension to SACI's program and are particularly enjoyed by students.

HOUSING
Students are housed in furnished apartments with other students throughout the center of Florence. SACI's housing fee covers the cost of housing and the reasonable use of utilities.

THE PROFESSOR
The class is taught in English by Dr. Lara Martin Lengel, an international and intercultural communication teacher and researcher. Dr. Lengel began researching communication and culture in the Mediterranean when she was a Fulbright Scholar in Tunisia during the 1993–1994. Since then, she has been awarded $500,000 in federal grants for research and curriculum development in the region.

Dr. Lengel's books and refereed articles address social, cultural and political impact of intercultural and international communication. She has taught and researched in Britain, China, Western and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa. She successfully launched the Communication and Culture in Italy study program in June—July 2007. Many of the participants in the 2007 program said this was the best university experience they had ever had.

THE EXPERIENCE
“The time I spent in Italy helped me amass field research to the extent that my thesis will be centered on the work and I will have more information for several additional conference papers.

Studying in Italy gave me the chance to pursue field research opportunities that I would not have been able to find anywhere else in the world. The field research I completed in Italy has formed the basis for my thesis and will give me the opportunity to present conference papers with much richer content than if I had theorized without the international experience.

At first, studying in Italy seemed like an opportunity I couldn't afford to miss. Now I realize that studying in Italy reshaped my research focus and the field work I completed there will form the basis for my thesis.”

—Megan O'Byrne, 2007 course participant

“Through the SACI summer session I learned more than I ever could have imagined. Not only was I able to explore so much of what Italy and its culture had to offer, but I was able to have many once-in-a-life time experiences.

Dr. Lengel made the registration and traveling processes much less stressful, and thanks to her worldly experience, advised us about all the places in Europe and Italy she thought we would enjoy.

The group that I went with was amazing and we could not have had more fun. There were about 150 students enrolled at SACI and it was easy to make friends and exchange advice about the “must-see” places in Italy and Europe.

The only thing I would change about my trip to Italy is that I would have gone as a freshman so that I could attend SACI every summer!”

—Maggie Roche, 2007 course participant

“Dr. Lengel's Communication and Culture in Italy workshop allowed me to participate in a type of academic program—study abroad—I didn't think I'd find as a graduate student.

Our month in Italy was an amazing experience, not just because of the beauty and hospitality of Florence, but also because of the immersive scholarly environment we found ourselves in. I found my scholarly ideas and interests being challenged and stretched in ways that probably would not have been possible had I stayed in Bowling Green for the summer.

I HIGHLY recommend the Communication and Culture in Italy workshop to anyone seeking a truly international experience. Besides, who can resist slurping down a chocolate gelato while strolling the streets of Florence on a balmy summer evening?”

—Megan Learman, 2007 course participant
