Dr. Lara Lengel
Associate Professor
BIOGRAPHY Lara Lengel (Ph.D. Ohio University, 1995) began her research on international and intercultural communication and new media when she was a Fulbright Scholar and American Institute of Maghreb Studies Fellow in Tunisia (1993-1994). She is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication Studies at Bowling Green State University, after seven years as Assistant then Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Richmond American International University in London. Dr. Lengel's books, Computer Mediated Communication: Social Interaction on the Internet (with Thurlow & Tomic, Sage, 2004), Culture and Technology in the New Europe: Civic Discourse in Transition in Post-Communist Nations (ed., Ablex, 2000), Intercultural Communication and Creative Practice (ed., Praeger, 2005), Casting Gender: Women and Performance in Global Contexts (with John T. Warren, eds., Peter Lang, 2005), and numerous articles which have appeared in, among others, Text and Performance Quarterly, Gender & History, a UN publication, Journal of Communication Inquiry, and Convergence: The Journal of Research into New Media Technologies, address international and intercultural communication, field research, women and performance, and use of information technology the Global South, specifically in Eastern Europe and the Middle East and North Africa region. She has taught, researched and presented research in these areas, as well as throughout Western Europe and in China. This past year, Dr. Lengel was a presenting delegate at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society (UN WSIS) in Tunis, Tunisia. She has been the U.S. Partnership Co-Director of a $330,000 grant project from the U.S. State Department's Middle East Partnership Initiative to develop media and democracy initiatives in the Middle East and North Africa.
