Running Logs

The runner's logbook serves the same functions as the scientist's notebook, for it records the result of each day's experiment.
Dr. Tim Noakes in "Lore of Running"

What's a running log?
Also known as a "training diary", you use it to keep track of the training that you do. They can be written or done online.

What do I need to record?
At a minimum, each entry should have a date and the amount of time you spent running. If you ran a race you also want some details about the results (splits, place, etc.). It's a good idea to also write down how you felt, since our training system is all about paying attention to how your body is reacting to the training. You can write down just about anything else you want.

What format should I use?
Do it however you like; I'll bring some examples to practice for you to look at. The one thing I'm going to insist on is you adding up the time spent running each week.

Where can I get one?
Any notebook or desk calendar will do. You can also buy a running log at Dave's Running Shop or just about any bookstore.

What about online running logs?
I think those are even better -- I do my running log this way. Almost all of them are free (you will have to register, though), they take care of the math for you, and you don't have to carry it around with you. A Google search will give you dozens to choose from; here are some recommendations:
