On-Line Resources
: All of these are free; the product is of varying quality. Caveat araneo-fluitator! (Let the web-surfer beware!) Let me know about any broken links you find.

Here are the handouts on passive verbs that Falcon Mail blocked from some students: the present system and the perfect system.

Here is a handout on basic uses of the different noun cases. Remember, each case has more uses than this, but these are the ones to start with. (Here's another cartoonier one.)

The Official Wheelock's website has a section devoted to pronunciation (with streaming or downloadable audio files)

WORDS, a superb (and freeware) program that parses and briefly defines Latin words, can be downloaded for Windows (of various flavors), Mac OS X, DOS, LINUX and OS/2. (You have to scroll down a bit.)

There is also an online version of WORDS that should work with any standard browser.

Ilaria Marchesi has produced a set of high quality, on-line interactive drills for Wheelock's Latin:

An older and incomplete version of Grote is on-line at:

"Wheelock's Latin Vocabulary Tools" by Eric Warmenhoven: build vocab lists and quizzes for a chapter, a set of chapters, etc. Really useful, and free.

Format:

Electrifying grammatical lectures; exercises and readings in Wheelock's Latin as assigned. Balloons! Prizes!! EVERYONE A WINNER!!! (Your results may vary. "Balloons" is used here in a metaphorical sense. Prizes consist of nuggets of pure incorporeal knowledge. Void where prohibited.)

Grading:

Attendance/Participation
Daily attendance and participation are required.
Students will hand in (at or before class) a scan or photocopy of the day's assigned work.
Emailing me a scan
(jmp.bgsu@gmail.com) is fine, but
isn't a substitute for showing up for class
.
The papers will be graded S or N, depending on whether they show a good faith effort to get through the day's assignment.
20%
In-Class Quizzes
(vocabulary & memorization, 1 per test)
20%
Tests
(grammar & translation, 1 for every 4 chs. of Wheelock; aprox. 5 total)
60%

FINE PRINT:

The lowest of the five quizzes and tests will drop except for the final, which must receive a passing grade for the student to pass the course. No one can pass the course without taking and passing the final exam.

Test IV (= Final Exam) may be taken in the last class period, or at the official Final time (Monday April 30, 10:45-12:45).

There will be no class on the following days: Mon. Jan. 18 (MLK jr. Day), March 5-9 (Spring Break), April 11-13 (Lecturer Is Lecturing Somewhere Else Days).

The maximum level of extra credit that will be counted toward the final grade = 5% of the total course points.

Missed tests and quizzes may not be made up, except by prior arrangement with the instructor.

"Even a potato in a dark cellar has a certain low cunning which serves him in excellent stead."--Butler, EREWHON

The instructor reserves the right to recognize significant improvement (or decline) in student performance when awarding the final grade.

The syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor; changes will be announced in class and posted on-line.

No incompletes will be issued, except for pressing reasons and by prior arrangement with the instructor.
