For my dissertation research I perform a content analysis of several methodically selected PhD program websites to develop a clear understanding of their functional and rhetorical characteristics. I then synthesize these findings with data gathered via interviews with faculty and students from my doctoral program regarding their roles in the use, design, or maintenance of our program website. Two fundamental principles guide my approach to teaching. First, I believe in collaborative learning that allows students and teachers to work together to co-create knowledge and understanding. Closely tied to this, I also believe it is my responsibility to help prepare students to effectively participate as literate members in a wide range of communication situations, especially those involving digital and multimedia literacies. As both a teacher and researcher of digital composition, I make it my professional responsibility to stay actively involved in projects that require me to perform the digital literacies I teach and study. Practitioner-based experiences like these help me synthesize theoretical understandings of digital literacy with the challenges of composing in real contexts for real audiences. More
