Professors of Educational Research SIG
Minutes of Business Meeting
10 April 2006
The 2006 SIG PER Chair, Rachelle Kisst Hackett, called the meeting to order at 6:20 pm.
Hackett introduced the SIG PER officers in attendance and mentioned those absent. SIG officers in attendance were: Rachelle Kisst Hackett (Chair), James McMillan (Program Chair), Dan McCollum (Vice-Chair), and Mark Earley (Webmaster).
Hackett asked those attending to introduce themselves and their affiliations. Each person in attendance stated their name and affiliation. There were approximately 40 individuals present.
There was a motion to approve the minutes of the 2005 business meeting made by Jim Flatz which was seconded by Mark Earley. The vote on the motion was unanimously in favor of approving the minutes.
The 2005-2006 Program Chair (James McMillan) gave his report. He noted that the SIG was granted 2 sessions and a business meeting. Twelve papers were submitted to the SIG and 5 of those 12 were accepted for presentation at the conference. One of the 2 sessions was not filled. McMillan believed only accepting high quality work was preferred over filling the sessions with proposals receiving low ratings. For each paper, 3 reviewers were assigned. If at least 2 of 3 reviewers recommended it, the paper was accepted for presentation. Likewise, if 2 or 3 reviewers recommended the paper not be accepted, it was rejected. Bruce Rogers questioned the quality of the submitted papers. McMillan reported that the standards used were those that are relatively consistent across AERA SIG’s and Divisions. Hackett commented on ratings of papers from the previous year. McMillan commented that next year the Program Chair (Dan McCollum) may consider filling a session with an invited paper, if there are not enough good quality papers to fill all sessions. Hackett noted that she had exercised this option when she was Program Chair the previous year. McMillan also reminded the group about the SIG’s upcoming paper session on Tuesday.
In Emiel Owens’ absence, Hackett presented the Treasurers’ Report. The beginning balance for Fiscal Year 2005-2006 was $2185.49. Incoming membership dues for the first 3 quarters were $460.00. A $150.00 SIG management fee was deducted by AERA. $120 was spent on 4 plaques for outstanding paper award recipients. For the 2006 business meeting $170.43 was spent on food and beverages. Therefore, the estimated balance as of April 8, 2006 was $2205.06. The current SIG membership was estimated to be approximately 120.
Hackett presented the Outstanding Paper Awards to Vicki L. Plano-Clark (2004), R. Burke Johnson, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie and Lisa Turner (2005). Hackett thanked all for their submissions.
Mark Earley agreed to continue as webmaster. Vic Wilson will continue as Awards Chair. Emiel Owens will continue as Treasurer.
Nominations for the new Vice-Chair were made. Mark Earley and Arturo Olivarez were nominated. Each member spoke about his background and interest in SIG: PER leadership. Paper ballots were cast. Ballots were counted by Hackett and McMillan. Mark Earley of Bowling Green State University was elected as the new Vice-Chair.
Hackett highlighted points from the general AERA SIG Task Force. Comments were as follows:
| Having someone in the secretary/treasurer position remains important; although AERA will be managing SIG funds, someone is needed to authorize spending. | |
| The business meeting plus 2 additional sessions will probably be our allocation from AERA for spots on the 2007 Program, based on our current membership count and the anticipated number of proposal submissions. There was discussion of the new formula for determining the number of sessions. Hackett encouraged more submissions to the SIG. |
A question from the audience was asked regarding the types of proposals in which SIG PER is interested. Vicki L. Plano Clark commented on the types of sessions we look for. McMillan also commented that we look for things professors of educational research can use.
There was some discussion of co-sponsoring sessions with other SIGS – in particular the Mixed Methods SIG chaired by R. Burke Johnson.
Margaret Eisenhart gave her invited address. Discussion followed.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:47 pm by Hackett.
