Dissertation: Challenging Traditional Understandings of Literacy: Working-Class Deaf People
Director: Dr. Donna Nelson-Beene Committee Members: Dr. Kristine Blair, Dr. Lee Nickoson, and Dr. Trinka Messenheimer

Dissertation Abstract: Utilizing interviews conducted in American Sign Language, a shared language between participants and researcher, this dissertation explores the literacy practices of working-class Deaf adults in context and how those practices challenge and complicate traditional definitions of literacy. A focus on digital and visual literacies in addition to traditional print literacies as practiced by three individuals in a variety of contexts provides the data for analysis. Employing qualitative research with an emphasis on feminist methods and methodologies recognizes positionality and assumptions and allows participants to share in the creation of knowledge. Each participant brings both unique and shared literacy practices that challenge traditional views.
