H. A. Schwarz

cf. G. Pólya, The Pólya Picture Album, Birkhäuser, 1987.

This is a picture of the famous mathematician Hermann Amandus Schwarz (1843 - 1921), who was a student of the immortal Karl Weierstrass.

The reason I've used Schwarz's likeness to grace my home page has very little to do with his mathematical career. Rather, it's the fact that he "really looks like a caricature of a professor," according to George Pólya.

Here is a picture of me: [ME] See the resemblance?

And here's a caricature drawn (on a cocktail napkin!) by my pal Vic Norton, famous cartoonist, mathematician, biker, programmer, investor, and bon vivant.
