Tony Maserati: My Favorite Mixing Engineer A famous engineer who has worked on many number one projects and has worked on the mixes of an elite list of artists. His record consists of many artists from many different genres of music. Tony Maserati adds “I'm just now getting what I use to mix on a daily basis together, turning to the same assembly of plug-ins on all my projects in whichever Glymph2 genre”(Sonnox), which shows that he has an all around ear for music fit to any area of creativity. While attending Berklee in 1983, Tony changed his major from composition to music production and engineering during its first year offered as a major. After finishing college at Berklee, he found himself at Sigma Sound Studios in New York where he worked an entry level position. Maserati then began to back an assistant engineer who would, in time, refer him to artists looking for engineers. After spending time growing and learning about the fundamentals of being a music engineer with good social skills, Maserati began to work on projects that landed on the first call list for music engineers in New York. Although it was his talent and his amazing ear for sound that created a lot of buss for Tony, he admits that it was his people skills and his interaction with other musicians and artist that contributed to his success and respect. His famous track record began in the mid 80’s when he worked along side breakthrough hip hop R&B artists such as Full Force, Lisa Lisa and Cheryl “Pepsi” Riley. He moved on to become a more independent music engineer and started to branch out by working with rap and soul artists. During the early 90’s, Maserati became entrenched in the rap and hip hop sound with mixes for Heavy-D, Brand Nubian, and world famous Bad Boy Entertainment artists. As his name grew in the world of hip hop and R&B engineering, many artists began to tap onto this “Maserati train”. R&B artists such as R. Kelly, Maxwell, Mya, Angie Stone, and Outkast and their number one hits became apart of the his growing track record of amazing mixes. |
