Recent News

4.24.09 - Over the past two weeks, I have received three awards that emphasize my dedication to research and leadership service. I received the Department of Sociology Dissertation Fellowship, which will give me 12 months of dissertation work uninterrupted by any type of service commitment. This award is much needed, as my data (over 20 years will be explored in my research) is very complex and my dissertation requires additional training in methodologies that I have never used.

In addition, I also received the Katzner and University Bookstore Funds for Graduate Student Research and Professional Development Award. This award will fund my travel so that I may present my research on childhood & adult socioeconomic disadvantage and cardiovascular health at the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population conference held in Marrakech, Morocco later this year.

Lastly, I was recently awarded the Student Life Award, an award that recognizes outstanding leadership contributions to Bowling Green State University and the surrounding community.

I thank all who helped me with applications and also thank reviewers/committees for selecting me to receive these great honors.

1.28.09 - Taking myself to the next level, I joined an intramural walleyball team. Our tournaments are Wednesday nights at 8:00pm at the Student Recreation Center. This Wednesday, our team won! Let's hope that we can continue this streak and go for the gold! You can find out more about walleyball at BGSU here, or you can check out this youtube video of the game actually being played.

1.27.09 - I was recently interviewed by the BG News about my experiences leading up to my appointment to the Board of Trustees at BGSU. Click here to read the article, but the complete newspaper for that day (with a photo of me) can be found here.

7.30.08 - The biggest accolade in my graduate career has happened recently. I was appointed as a Board of Trustee Member for Bowling Green State University by the Governor of Ohio (Ted Strickland). I am so very thrilled to have this honor. You can see various local, regional and national papers about my appointment online. The links are below:

- I won! I was elected to be on the Board of Directors for the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP). This is a two-year appointment, so I must remain a student until 2010. As some know, I am also a newsletter editor for the organization (Society and Social Welfare Division). My statement can be found here and the results of the election are found here.

2.18.08
- I was interviewed by Precious Yamaguchi recently for the upcoming February edition of the Project Search newsletter's "student profiles" section. I was selected as the first graduate student to be featured. My interview can be found here (on Page 3) and my photo is (also) seen on the front page.
