Basic directions for scanning in the Scientific Computing Lab:

  1. There is one computer with a scanner hooked up to it, right in front of the lab assistant's desk.
  2. On that computer, pull down the Apple menu, Applications, Adobe Photoshop.
  3. Place your document on the scanner, face down, pushed to the near left hand corner.  The top of the document should be nearest to you.
  4. In Photoshop, select File, Import, ScanGear CS-U 6.2.0 (which must be the name of the scanner).
  5. Before scanning, make sure the resolution is set to 300 DPI (dots per inch) and that you choose Black and White instead of Color or Grayscale.  Also, click the Advanced button, then the HalfTone tab to make sure the Black/White threshhold is set to something like 160.  (This works well for pencil on white paper.  You may need to adjust it for other situations.)
  6. Click Scan.  Once it is done, you can change the zoom factor by typing in the lower left corner of the window in which your document appears.  Make sure the threshhold is set right.  A larger number will make the black lines thicker.
  7. Pull down File, Save As, and change the format to Photoshop PDF.  Make sure the filename ends with .pdf.  You might want to save it into your public_html folder, or, if you have several pages to combine into one .pdf file, you might want to create a new folder and simply call your documents Untitled-1.pdf, since then Photoshop will number them automatically for you.  You can name the combined file whatever you want and put it in public_html.

Combining multiple .pdf files into one

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat.
  2. File, Open, and open the first page.
  3. Document, Insert Pages..., find the second page, Select, and respond to the dialog box that it should be inserted After the Last page.
  4. Continue inserting pages, always Last (if that's the order you have them in).
  5. File, Save As

Note that you can delete pages or rotate them, if you need to.  It may also help to click the Thumbnails tab on the left side of the screen to see all of the pages at once.
