You can take attendance and learn people's names using an attendance chart.  You can download pdf files for a classroom with 8 rows of 4 seats each or 10 rows of 5 seats each.  You can download Excel spreadsheets for the 8 by 4 and 10 by 5 charts, then you can modify them yourselves.  The spreadsheets are originally from Jason Hasbrouck.
